Li Xiaodong The pleasure of reading a book, is, more often than not, a solitary pursuit. The words on the page of a novel are transformed, through eye and mind, into an imaginary screenplay. The reader chooses The little library of LiYuan represents a major break with what’s going on in contemporary China. The simple programme in the midst of nature turns its back on relentless urban life; its very raison d’être - reading and thinking - demands a slower, more humane pace where human life and respect for place are once again essential values. The Liyuan Library is a reading and relaxation space for visitors to and residents of Jiaojiehe village, part of Yanqi township in Beijing’s Huairou district. The building is 170 square meters in area, with a main room 30 meters long, 4.35 meters wide, and 6.3 meters tall. Liyuan Library was designed in 2011 by architect Li Xiaodong, who won an international prize for the building in 2014.
